What is Chiropractic Care?

A hands-on, non-invasive, and drug-free practice that safely and effectively helps relieve pain and improve the body’s overall function; uses various treatments depending on your needs, from manual ‘hands-on’ adjustment techniques to soft tissue therapy.

What does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractors help ease Canadians’ pain, enabling them to live the active, pain-free lives they want. Chiropractors treat neck pain, back pain, arthritis, certain types of headaches, injuries and more. They are spine, muscle and nervous system experts in assessing, diagnosing, treating and developing care plans to keep you moving and pain-free.

Chiropractors focus on your spine, muscle, and nervous system and treat the bones, muscles, soft tissues, and joints that you use every day. The spine, muscle, and nervous system supports your weight, keeps your body stable, protects your organs, and keeps you moving. It also connects directly to other vital systems in your body, which is why medical professionals, researchers, and the wider health community trust the spine care expertise of chiropractors to assess, diagnose, and treat conditions and injuries related to the spine, muscle, and nervous system.

For optimal health and quality of life, a chiropractor should be part of every Canadian’s healthcare team.

Is Getting Adjusted by a Chiropractor Safe?

There is a lot of debate surrounding chiropractic care. Some people swear by it, while others think that it is unsafe. So, what is the truth? Is getting adjusted by a chiropractor safe?

The answer is yes…

Chiropractic is an excellent and safe choice for people of all ages. It is a therapy that does not involve drugs or invasiveness and can be used to treat various conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint pain.

Pregnant women can also benefit from chiropractic care. It’s safe for infants and children too.

People of all ages can benefit from this form of natural health care. A study published in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy found that seniors who receive regular chiropractic care have better balance, flexibility, and overall mobility.

Let’s discuss the pros and cons of chiropractic care so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not it is right for you!

It’s a common misconception that chiropractic care is only for people who have neck and back pain. The truth, however, is that many other ailments can be treated with this method.

The first thing you need to do is determine what your needs and health concerns are.   In general, if you are experiencing pain, stiffness, or limited mobility in your joints, then chiropractic care may be able to help you.

What Exactly is Chiropractic Care?

A chiropractic adjustment, also referred to as spinal manipulation, is a treatment provided by a certified chiropractor. By using their hands or small instruments, they apply controlled force to your spinal joints in order to relieve pain and improve motion. Manipulation has been used across many different conditions and provides various benefits depending on the individual case.

Although chiropractic adjustment is mostly considered safe. There are rare complications for people with certain conditions, such as osteoporosis or cervical spondylosis, may be at a higher risk for complications or side-effects such as  temporary soreness or pain in the treated area. This is typically mild and goes away within 24 hours.

Now that we have discussed some of the risks involved with chiropractic care, let’s look at the benefits!  People regularly choose chiropractic care because it is a natural, non-invasive form of treatment that does not require medication or surgery.

The objective of a chiropractic adjustment is to return to regular joint function and muscle balance. Treatments can also lessen stress on the immune system with wellness care.  Chiropractic care is most commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. However, it can also be used to treat other conditions, including:

1. Headaches and Chiropractic Care

If you suffer from cervicogenic headaches or migraines, know that you are not alone. These types of headaches are commonly treated by chiropractors.

Cervicogenic headaches get their name because they are usually referred from another source, typically the neck area. Migraine headaches cause severe throbbing pain and tend to be experienced on just one side of the head. When it comes to chronic headache management, options outside of medication are few and far between.

2. Sciatica and Chiropractic Care

Sciatica is a pain that radiates from the lower back down the sciatic nerve to the legs. Treatment options for this condition include exercise, natural therapies, medication, steroid injections, and surgery.

The researchers found that those who actively manipulated their hips experienced fewer days of moderate or severe pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica. They also did not report any negative effects.

3. Neck Pain and Chiropractic Care

The Annals of Internal Medicine recently released a study that found more than half of those who saw a chiropractor for neck pain (caused by factors such as spine disease, nerve compression, and muscle stiffness) had less pain after only 12 weeks. In fact, the group that visited the chiropractor also reported significantly less pain and disability than the groups that took medication or received physical therapy.

4. Lower Back Pain and Chiropractic Care

Studies have shown that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, can provide relief from mild to moderate low back pain. In some studies, spinal manipulation has been found to be as effective as other standard treatments, such as exercise or pain-relief medications, for certain types of back pain.

5. Work Injuries

Accidents happen whether severe or minor treatment can be effective for:

  • Overexertion injuries from pulling, pushing, lifting, holding, throwing, or catching
  • Slipping or tripping
  • Falling
  • Repetitive motion injuries like cleaning or typing
  • Injury from falling objects
  • Bumping to a wall or other solid things

6. Sports Injuries

Chiropractic treatment offers a balanced approach for sports injury recovery. This type of sports medicine allows you to seek relief without relying on surgery or pain medication. A chiropractic adjustment can help the injured areas return to normal function and mobility.

Regular visits to the chiropractor will not only encourage recovery, but will help reduce the risk of future injuries. This is achieved through general spine alignment, which allows the whole body to function better and increases the overall range of motion. Our chiropractic clinic encourages this type of chiropractic for athletes even if no sports injuries are present.

Chiropractic care can be effective for a number of different sports injuries. Some of the most common issues we see in patients include: Muscle sprains and strains, ankle sprains, groin pull, hamstring strain, various knee injuries, ACL tear or strain, golf/tennis elbow, sciatica nerve pain, and a variety of shoulder injuries.

Our clinic can also provide strategies for whiplash and concussion related injuries too.

Additional Advantages of Chiropractic Treatment

Apart from all the key benefits mentioned above, chiropractic treatment has so much more to offer. Here are just some of these:

1. Improved Posture

Our posture is something we often fail to give importance to, especially when we’re too focused on our work. However, having a bad one, in the long run, can make us susceptible to back pains. For some, it may also cause them to lose confidence as it negatively affects our overall appearance.

Thanks to chiropractic treatment, bad posture can be treated in just a few sessions. By making the necessary adjustments in our spine, the treatment makes it easier for our back to adjust and familiarize itself with the proper posture.

2. Better Sleep

Chiropractic adjustment can help improve our sleep by reducing pain and minimizing the effects of stress on our bodies.

3. Improved Wellness

Making chiropractic adjustment a regular part of our lifestyle can be beneficial to our overall wellness. The treatment makes it easier for our bodies to adjust to certain activities or routines with fewer chances of getting injuries.
