Happy People Do These 10 Things Differently

Most of us aspire to live a fulfilled and happy life, seeking satisfaction, joy, and energy. It’s important to begin each day managing our energy resources.  Think of energy as money in a bank account, we can either deposit or withdraw from our account, and it fluctuates depending on our activities.   The aim is to have more in our accounts and not be in overdraft!   Often a few tweaks to your regular habits can create more happiness in our lives – our habits matter.

Let’s start by looking at some of the habits or daily routines that can increase your energy account. Add as many as you feel comfortable with or that work with your lifestyle.

  1. Start your day with a morning routine – morning routine helps to keep your day flowing in a non-stressful way.  It can be helpful to have your gym clothes out, or your work outfit chosen, and a big glass of prepared lemon water prepared to start your day.  Schedule time to do things like exercise, meditate, pray, or eat a nutritious prepared breakfast.  The most important factor is that your routine is sustainable and consistent.
  2. Smile – Try smiling at yourself in the mirror each morning.  Smiling causes the brain to release dopamine, which in turn makes us happier.  Throughout the day you can find times to smile to bring up your mood.
  3. Eat nourishing food – A well-balanced, healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and lean protein, is at the core of well-being and energy. You really are what you eat.  Consume a variety of foods from all the food groups to get a range of nutrients and to provide energy throughout the day.  Choose fresh when possible, including all the colours of the rainbow.
  4. Get regular exercise – Exercise can help reduce stress, strengthen muscles, boost endurance, and helps your body work more efficiently.  Any amount of physical activity can make a difference, try taking a walk every night after dinner, sign up for a yoga class or include a few minutes of stretching daily.
  5. Practice Gratitude – Simply being grateful can give your mood a boost, have an attitude of gratitude. Start taking note of things you are grateful for, as you become more aware of the many good things in your everyday life.  It’s easy to take a few minutes each day to write down the things you are grateful for.
  6. Keep company with good people – Be selective about the company you keep, connecting with others who radiate positivity and have similar interests will energize you.  It’s important to set limits and boundaries with the people who do not refill your energy reserves.
  7. Set aside time for self-care – It’s easy to get caught up with business.  Take time to nurture yourself so that you can be at your best emotionally, physically, and mentally.  Make time for you a priority and talk to yourself, say things like: “You’ll make it through this.”, or “You’ve got this.” Getting in the habit of saying “I love you” to yourself can increase feelings of self-worth boosting inner strength.
  8. Give Back – Any act of kindness, big or small, can contribute to happy good feelings. Seek out a cause that means something to you and find a way to give back!
  9. Give a compliment – Giving a compliment is a quick, easy way to brighten someone’s day.  It’s surprising how good this can feel.  It’s even better if you can say it with a smile, giving your own happiness a boost.
  10. Prioritizing sleep – is one of the best things you can do to set yourself up for a successful, energized day. Sleep deprivation can affect us negatively by affecting mood, motivation, and energy levels. Getting quality sleep at least 7-8 hours nightly is a healthy habit.   To improve your sleep, create a relaxing and restful environment, minimizing both light and noise, and turning off electronic devices.
